On 19–20 November, the partners of the REFINE project, funded by the European Union through the Horizon Europe programme, gathered in Thessaloniki (Greece) for a follow-up meeting. The sessions focused on reviewing the achievements of the first project year and planning the technical and coordination activities for the upcoming phases.
The REFINE project aims to develop and demonstrate an innovative artificial photosynthesis system for the direct production of high-energy-density alcohols, such as isopropanol and butanol. This breakthrough concept integrates photoelectrochemical and biological processes, combining hydrogen generation by water photoelectrolysis, COâ‚‚ capture and conversion in an advanced biorefinery powered exclusively by sunlight.

Throughout the meeting, partners presented the progress made within their respective work packages and discussed key technical challenges and priorities for the next period.
Apria Systems was represented by Esther Santos, Research Project Manager, who contributed to the activities related to the technological development of the system.
The project consortium includes the University of Oslo, RWTH Aachen University, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Oslo University Hospital, PSA, the Institute for Energy Technology, Apria Systems, the University of Strathclyde and Loughborough University.
