3 de May de 2024SUMMARY
Decentralised solution to remove contaminants of emerging concern from hospital effluents
- Funding: European Commission
- Call: LIFE programme 2023 – Environment
- Project code: LIFE23-ENV-ES-GENESYS/101147763
- Budget: 2,174,721.50€
- Period: September 2024 – February 2028
- Webpage: life-genesys.eu

OBJECTIVE
Demonstrate an MBR system followed by an advanced oxidation step consisting of UV-LED/H2O2, as a decentralized solution for hospital effluent treatment to reduce the load of organic micropollutants, antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) and antibiotic resistant bacteria (ARBs).
In addition, LIFE GENESYS will develop a digital tool in order to help the hospital predict the concentration of drugs (antibiotics) discharged into wastewater and the related impact on the development of antibiotic resistance.
TIMELINE
The project, with a start date of September 2024, will present its final results in February 2028.
2024 - 2026DEVELOPMENT
Design and construction of the solution.2026-2028TESTING
Demonstration of the solution in a hospital.2024-2028MONITORING
Evaluation of the impact and effectiveness of the solution.
ROLE OF APRIA
UV-LED / H2O2 System

Apria's role in the LIFE GENESYS project is the design, construction, and commissioning of the UV-LED/H2O2 system that will allow the complete disinfection of the hospital effluent and the elimination of the ARB, ARG and POPs present.
We will also participate in the supervision and optimization of the integrated treatment train during validation activities. Finally, we will work on the exploitation of the results, the replicability of the technology and its transferability to other pollution sources, as well as the design of the market strategy.
CONSORTIUM
GENESYS is formed by a consortium of six partners
Cetaqua, Labaqua, Companyia D'aigues De Sabadell, Corporacio Sanitaria Parc Tauli De Sabadell, Fundacio Institut D'investigació I Innovació Parc Tauli, and Apria Systems.
