After 5 years of implementation, the LIFE-3E project was successfully completed last September.
The project aimed to improve the sustainability of water resources through the demonstration, with an innovative concept-based prototype, of the efficient wastewater remediation in coastal urban wastewater treatment plants (UWWTPs) for urban, irrigation or industrial uses.
The project has been completed, achieving the main challenges defined for it:
- The operation of a system based on RED technology, capable of handling an inlet flow of 1 m3/h, has been demonstrated.
- Thanks to tertiary treatment, a stream of fresh water suitable for different applications has been generated.
- It has been possible to generate 44 Wh/m3 of renewable energy.
The performance of different WWTP effluents has been tested to assess the system's replicability.
