From solar energy to fuel: A holistic artificial photosynthesis platform for the production of viable solar fuels
- Funding: Horizon Europe
- Call: HORIZON-CL5-2022-D3-03
- Project code: 101122323
- Budget: 5,150,121.40 €
- Period: November 2023- October 2027

OBJECTIVE
Novel hybrid inorganic-biological systems
The project focuses on novel hybrid inorganic-biological systems for the production of solar fuels from CO2 to H2 as the sole feedstock.

TIMELINE
The project, initiated in November 2023, is set to present its final results in October 2027
ROLE OF APRIA
Hybrid inorganic-biological demonstrator

Apria's role in the Refine project is to design, integrate and build a system that combines a photoelectrolyser in series with a fermenter to produce solar isobutanol from CO2 and H2 as the sole feedstock.
The only energy input is light.
CONSORTIUM
Refine is formed by a consortium of nine partners
University of Oslo, RWTH Aachen University, Aristotle University of Thessaloniki, Oslo University Hospital, CIEMAT-PSA, Institutt for Energiteknikk, Apria Systems, University of Strathclyde, and Loughborough University
