OBJECTIVE
Flexible Solar power generation with Compressed Air Energy Storage
ASTERIx-CAESar aims to develop of a novel high-efficiency solar thermal power plant concept with an integrated electricity storage solution, by combining air-based central receiver Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) and Compressed Air Energy Storage (CAES) to maximize conversion efficiency and power grid energy management, thus enabling a new operation strategy and business models.
TIMELINE
The project, initiated in June 2023, is set to present its final result in September 2027
2023 - 2027DESIGN
Design of optimized TRL6-7 prototypes, scaled receiver concentrated solar power and advanced heat exchangers.2023-2026POWER CYCLE
CAES power cycle optimization.2023-2027AI METHODS
Automation and improvement of plant operation and monitoring using AI methods.2023 - 2027CONSTRUCTION AND VALIDATION
Of CSP CAES prototypes (including the integrated with desalination).
ROLE OF APRIA
Small-scale RO desalination system

Apria will participate in WP1 and WP6, where will be in charge of designing and building the small-scale RO desalination system together with the gas-liquid pressure exchanger (GL-PX).
Apria will also collaborate in integrating the RO / GL-PX system with the ASTERIx–CAESAR prototype.
CONSORTIUM
ASTERIx-CAESar is implemented by a consortium of 17 partners
Fundación CENER, CIEMAT, Universidad de Sevilla, Doosan Skoda Power SRO, Universita Degli Studi Roma Tre, Fraunhofer, Clancy Haussler Rita, Aalborg CSP AS, European Turbine Network, Fundación IMDEA EnergÃa, Innovation therm technologies SL, Pritzkow Walter Erich Christian, Diacheiristis Ellinikou Diktyou Dianomis Elektrikis Energeias AE, Engionic Femto Gratings GMBH, Apria Systems SL, Softinway Switzerland LLC, and Bluebox Energy LTD.
